SPEECH BUBBLE | MARSDEN GALLERY, CASULA POWERHOUSE

In collaboration with UNSW’s Interactive Media Lab (IML), I volunteered as a 3D Modeller to develop the digital 3D visualisation of their ‘Speech Bubble’ project in Autodesk Maya.
This light and sound installation was a complex technical task that strengthened my ability to translate ideation into a 3D space.
With 2D orthographic sketches, I re-created the Marsden Gallery in Casula Powerhouse as the environment for the exhibition. I then located over 400 lights and 100 speakers to form the desired speech bubble shape in the gallery, which would then be utilised as a digital layout for programming. My constant visual updates and “sensible questions”* allowed for an accurate digital creation of the work.
This digital file was then exported into Unity for the IML team to test programming of the lights, and used to calculate timber roof panels mounting the work. This build was additionally used by the IML team for an art installation at Central Park Mall, funded by Create NSW for a live performance event.
From this build I additionally created multiple artistic renders, employing skills in lighting, compositing and editing in Photoshop. These renders were then distributed by UNSW as advertising material on Casula Powerhouse’s website for their ‘Speech Bubble’ installation.
